About our Nurse Practitioner Led Practice and the Services we Provide
What is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner?
A Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with specialized training in Psychiatry and Mental Health. PMHNP-BC has received graduate education and specialized clinical training in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of psychiatric and mental health disorders and national board certification. Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners work independently as well as collaboratively with other health care professionals, to expertly provide a full complement of psychiatric and mental health services which includes, but is not limited to, diagnosing psychiatric and mental health disorders, prescribing medications to treat psychiatric and mental health disorders, and providing psychotherapy and patient and family education.
How are you different than other psychiatric providers?
Nurse practitioners have a holistic view of providing treatment. We address mind, body, and spirit addressing these key aspects of each individual is essential to achieving the highest level of wellness rather than a sole focus on a condition or disorder. Life choices, experiences, and values affect our mental health and are integrated into creating a treatment plan that is realistic and individualized to help you achieve your goals. Medication management and therapy can help to provide the best outcomes and therefore we highly recommend ongoing therapy in conjunction with the services we provide. We can provide referrals for therapists and other healthcare professionals as needed.
What conditions do you treat?
We treat many psychiatric and mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and bipolar disorders. We provide treatment via telehealth and office based visits.
Can you prescribe medication?
Yes, we can prescribe medication.
Are there limitations to what medications you prescribe?
Schedule II drugs can only be prescribed by nurse practitioners in the state of Texas under very limited circumstances. We do not prescribe Schedule II drugs which includes many stimulant medications used to treat ADHD such as Adderall or Vyvanse.
We are not accepting new patients with ADHD who require treatment with stimulant medication.
We can provide services for patients with ADHD who desire treatment with non-stimulant medications.
Although we are authorized to prescribe controlled substances such as benzodiazepines (which includes drugs such as Ativan, Clonazepam, and Xanax), because of the risk for physiological dependence and long-term negative effects with these types of medications we choose as a matter of ethical practice not to prescribe these mediations for ongoing use. If you currently take these medications, we can help you safely taper off them.
In the state of Texas, nurse practitioners are required to have a delegation agreement with a physician. We have such an agreement with a local psychiatrist with whom we meet for monthly meetings to review cases and prescribing practices.
How can I afford your services without using insurance?
Please see the list below of insurance company which are currently in-network with us. You will be considered a Private Pay client if you are not insured with the companies listed below at the time of service or at any time there is a lapse in coverage with in-network insurance companies. Payment is due at the time services are rendered for all Private Pay Clients. We accept exact cash, debit, and credit cards as forms of payment. The first three months of treatment typically involve the largest expense due to the need for more frequent visits as we develop and make modifications to your treatment plan and adjust your medications to the optimal levels. During the initial adjustment period you’ll need an office visit every 1-3 weeks to adjust your medications and monitor your progress. When your medication regimen is stabilized, you will need to make a follow-up visit at least every ninety days to monitor your progress and refill your medications. Some patients may require more frequent or interim visits determined on a case-by-case basis.
